charlie: Bio

Vocalist, composer, performance artist. Charlie Demos.

A graduate of Bennington college, Charlie studied both classical and jazz voice, piano, and composition. With a purely astounding vocal range, He attributes his musical versatility and unique style to studying the music of Meredith Monk with voice teacher/mentor, Tom Bogdan and exploring a myriad of genres with composition teacher Kitty Brazelton. Steven Bach, his academic advisor, was instrumental in encouraging Charlie to create elaborate and thoughtful stage shows.

Since he first burst onto the music scene in March 2006, the prolific Mr. Demos has already released three chart-topping albums, including his eponymous debut album, from which its first single “Don’t Ever Stop” was featured in Casper Andreas’ film, “A Four Letter Word;” 2008’s "How to be a Boi", which featured the title song in Rob Williams’ “3-Day Weekend;” and the EP "Anatomy 1".

The music video to the first single from "Anatomy 1", “Insane,” shot to the top of the charts shortly after its world premiere, and won a spot on the LOGO Network’s “Ultimate Queer Videos of All Time” list, as well as being nominated for “Video of the Year.” Directly following an explosive "butting of heads" at the LOGO/Viacom offices, feeling frustrated and confined, Mr. Demos abandoned the road of "commercial music" with his EP, "Screaming Underground" released as a free download in September of 2010. Since released, it has been downloaded over 40,000 times.

Most recently expanding his creative palate, Charlie art directs and produces film with videographer, I.R. Marin, for their TV show on Manhattan Public Access, THE DAGGER: Alternative Queer Arts Programming. The first episode of the dagger premiered in the Queer Pop Up Art Museum in Brooklyn, NY in January of 2011 to critical acclaim. He describes these films as experimental, queer art house greatly inspired by Andy Warhol, Paul Morrissey, Derek Jarman, Bruce La Bruce, and Alejandro Jodorosky.

Additionally works include composing music for the dance company, DIESEL DANCE FUSION, and working with Danish performance artist, Anette Norgaard on her multi-media off broadway piece, "Dramatically Different". (music composition, studio album producer)

Charlie Demos is a fixture in the New York City underground queer music/art scene with emotional and provoking multi-media performance art pieces attacking mainstream gay culture and providing an alternative outlet for the modern queer voice.
